I have heard about Nuvaro and I want to find out for myself whether he thinks the way I do. I want to bring him something that is actually on my mind, not a test question, and see how he handles it. Everything I build in this month stays with me if I carry on.

I have a topic. Something that matters, that I want to take apart properly, come to a decision on, and then act on. I would rather do that in a concentrated two or three weeks, in my ‘free’ hours and wherever I happen to be, than travel to fixed appointments spread across three months. I also want to really understand one person who counts for me: what drives them, what they care about, and where the sensitive ground is. Once the topic is settled, I am done. I can come back next quarter and carry on where I left off.

I have an intense stretch ahead of me. I need both: someone to think with, and someone to take work off my hands. Over these three months I put the people who matter in front of him — including the ones I find difficult — and build my background as we go. The more of it he knows, the shorter my question can be. Before long I can hand him a piece of work without explaining who it is for or what is at stake. What I build stays. When the next one comes, I am not starting over.

I want Nuvaro at hand through the working week, whenever I need him. For the sparring before an important conversation, for his view on a decision, for a topic he works through ahead of me. The higher I go, the more my success depends on how I handle the few people who really count — and on how well I know myself. The work I can hand over — the draft, the read-through, the preparation — gives me time back. And I hardly have to explain any more; he knows me and my world by now.
